According to records submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects 101,049 cars from the 2022 to 2024 model years, and its projected impact is 1 percent of all recalled vehicles.

Documents from the NHTSA state that the affected vehicles' roof molding may come free and separate, increasing the chance of an accident.

Kia and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are conducting a recall for over 100,000 Sportage and Carnival vehicles. The issue triggering the recall arises from the roof molding. Documents submitted to the NHTSA indicate that the affected cars' roof moldings may separate from the body of the vehicle, raising the possibility of an accident.

It's interesting to note that although though all cars are part of the same recall, their manufactures are different. While the Carnival recall affects 60,623 vehicles from 2022–2024 and includes cars made in Korea, the Sportage recall affects 40,426 vehicles from 2023–2023 and includes cars built in Georgia. Only 1% of the vehicles in the recall are thought to be faulty, according to NHTSA records.

According to NHTSA-filed documents, there are two possible reasons why roof molding might break free or separate from the vehicle: either the roof molding was installed incorrectly during vehicle assembly, or the retaining clips interfered with too much roof panel sealant.
